What exactly does transitional mean?

In the good old days every good wardrobe had what we called a “between-seasons coat” or a special pair of shoes for that “in-between time”. Today, one fashion season seems to merge seamlessly into the next one. When it comes down to it, we want to wear our favorite pieces all year round.
